Sustainability News in the Lower School

Hydroponics: Pennfield fifth graders have harvested their first crop of lettuce and basil grown with their new “Green Machine!” The students decided unanimously (almost!) to share the goods with their fellow lunch mates in the form of a fresh green salad made that day with tomatoes provided by the PSA and homemade dressing provided by the Sustainability Department. It was absolutely delicious, and because most students partook, there were no leftovers.

Depending on what is grown, it takes about 4-6 weeks from planting to harvest. Next on our list are tomatoes, marigolds, kale and lettuce (a favorite of Penny, Mrs. Alexander’s Science room guinea pig!).
