Connecting with Friends through Book Club

By December 5, 2020News
The Pennfield School’s Diversity, Equity, and Justice (DEJ) Committee is pleased to present the first Zoom Book Club meeting between pre-kindergarten students at Pennfield and the Martin Luther King Community Center. This program is made possible by the kind donation of Crystal Sargent to the Pennfield DEJ Committee. Mrs. Sargent, a former Pennfield parent and school speech therapist, was looking for a mechanism to continue her positive influence on the lives of local children, and this seemed to be the perfect fit!
A partnership between the teachers at the Martin Luther King Community Center (Valencia Friend, Judy Hall) and The Pennfield School (Jenny Williams, Allicyn Hackett) will ensure this exciting undertaking continues and plan to meet monthly to share more books. Each meeting includes a reading of the monthly book selection, as well as a physical activity and an art activity. What a wonderful and important way for these young children to meet, make new friends, and have fun while learning!
The first book we read was One Love by Cedella Marley, based on the Bob Marley song.
We introduced ourselves, then Mrs. Williams read the book over Zoom; Miss Valencia also had a copy of the book too to be sure all the children could see. We then listened and danced to the picture book version of Bob Marley’s song, One Love. After we said good-bye over Zoom, we logged off to work on our friendship quilt using the word LOVE.
Our next meeting is on Wednesday December 9th and Miss Valencia choose the book I Am Enough by Grace Byers.
