This winter, Pennfield has transformed its campus into an open-air gallery with the launch of a new outdoor sculpture exhibition featuring the work of three celebrated local artists: Ed McAloon, Ellen Blomgren, and Shawndavid Berry. The installation invites visitors, families, and students to experience original works of art in a natural setting, just steps from Pennfield’s classrooms and community spaces.
The project came to life through a collaboration between Pennfield’s Development Office and the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) initiative. Together, they brought a diverse range of artistic voices to campus and created a meaningful cultural experience for students and the broader community.
“Our campus feels different with art woven into the landscape,” said Lizz de Villegas, Development Manager at The Pennfield School. “These sculptures spark conversations, ignite imagination, and give our students an opportunity to engage with art in a new, accessible way.”
A Creative Experience for the Whole Community
The exhibition invites neighbors and visitors to enjoy a peaceful walk through the grounds while experiencing the creativity of local artists. Students encounter the sculptures during daily outdoor learning, recess, and class transitions, making the entire campus a dynamic, creative classroom. All sculptures are available for purchase, offering families and collectors a meaningful way to support the arts at Pennfield and beyond.
Artists Who Inspire Curiosity and Conversation
Each artist brings a distinct creative perspective to the exhibition.
Ed McAloon – Known for evocative metal and stone forms, McAloon’s sculptures explore movement, balance, and the relationship between form and space.
Shawndavid Berry – Berry’s flowing, dreamlike wood sculptures and vibrant large-scale canvases are inspired by nature, inviting viewers into a surreal, imaginative world.
Ellen Blomgren – Blomgren’s playful ceramic and mixed-media works spark curiosity and joy, blending whimsy with thought-provoking storytelling.
