At The Pennfield School, Spanish is a dynamic journey that begins in preschool with songs, stories, and vocabulary, fostering early language skills and cultural curiosity. In Lower School, students build on this foundation through interactive games, music, and skits, with increased focus on vocabulary and Latin American culture. In Middle School, Spanish becomes a daily academic subject emphasizing oral proficiency, grammar, and cultural exploration through projects and discussions about countries like Mexico, Spain, and Chile. Eighth graders demonstrate fluency through independent projects and many participate in the National Spanish Exam and Spanish Honor Society. Most graduates enter high school at Spanish 2 Honors or Spanish 3 level. A highlight is the optional Middle School trip to a Spanish-speaking country, such as Costa Rica or Guatemala, offering immersive experiences that strengthen language skills and global awareness.

Science & Sustainability
Our sustainability program is centered around community, care, and conservation, preparing students to adopt lifelong habits that benefit the planet. Through interactive learning, after-school programming, and summer camps, students are introduced to sustainability topics and projects that are interwoven into curriculum and take full advantage of our beautiful 19-acre campus, located adjacent to the Aquidneck Land Trust.
Public Speaking and Communications
Public speaking and effective communication are woven into the fabric of a student’s journey from the earliest grades. Students feel confident to share their thoughts and opinions starting as early as preschool, and their confidence grows in kindergarten as they participate in “Takeover Tuesday.” Each week, Kindergartners, along with their teacher, take the lead and run the morning assembly. Lower School students participate in a cross-curricular project during grades 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Combining social studies, language arts, research, music, movement, and public speaking, students present their final project to their peers, faculty, and families in the gym. These early experiences lay the groundwork for more formal opportunities in Middle School, where students regularly present research, lead class discussions, and speak at school-wide events.
This journey culminates in 8th grade with The Panther Project, a yearlong independent study capstone project. The Panther Project enriches students’ intellectual lives by providing a dynamic, hands-on learning experience that emphasizes creativity, engagement, and service. Designed to break away from the traditional classroom structure, the Panther Project empowers students to synthesize their academic learning through a culminating real-world task. Students embark on a personal journey of exploration and discovery, guided by their own passions and interests. The result is a meaningful project that showcases their growth and leaves a lasting legacy within the Pennfield community. Through this capstone experience, students will explore real-world issues, conduct research, develop practical skills, and present their findings to their peers, faculty and members of the community. The Panther Project is more than a final assignment—it is a celebration of each student’s academic journey at Pennfield. By engaging with real-world problems and creative expression, students demonstrate not only what they know, but who they are becoming as thoughtful, capable, and curious individuals.
