Athletics
Athletics are an essential and engaging part of student life at The Pennfield School. Whether a child is trying a sport for the very first time or looking to refine their skills, every student is encouraged to participate and grow. We foster a welcoming environment where every child feels supported, valued, and empowered to contribute as part of a team. We believe that physical fitness and good health practices are integral to a healthy mind and body. Providing these tools and lessons in a supportive and safe atmosphere gives every child the confidence they’ll need to embrace fitness, sports, and their health as lifelong pursuits. You’ll see smiles on faces and hear lots of encouraging words when you attend a match, a meet or a game where Pennfield students are participating.
Students in grades 1-3 may participate in Sports Club to learn the fundamentals of sportsmanship, practice team building skills, and increase hand/eye coordination through a variety of sports and physical education games.
Starting in 3rd grade, students may join the Cross Country team, marking the beginning of their interscholastic athletic journey. From 4th grade onward, students can compete with other schools in the region. Besides cross country, our athletic seasons include soccer in the fall, basketball, indoor track, and swimming in the winter, and lacrosse and track in the spring.
Pennfield has also partnered with local organizations to expand their athletic offerings. Students participate in golf at the Newport County YMCA, horsemanship & horseback riding programs at Stable Strides Foundation, and swimming at St. George’s.
We encourage all students to take part in at least one after-school sport each year, and many choose to play in all three seasons. At Pennfield, every player has a role—there are no benchwarmers here. Our focus extends beyond the scoreboard; through sports, students learn invaluable lessons about perseverance, teamwork, and personal growth. These experiences shape confident, compassionate leaders both on and off the field.
