Pennfield’s school day does not end for many Nursery and Pre-Kindergarten students at 1:00 p.m. The majority of these youngsters, especially ones with siblings in Kindergarten and above, cross the hall and settle into the Extended Day routine. In the Extended Day room, teachers continue to interact with the children in arts and crafts, music, books, games and outdoor play. The Extended Day room continues to fill throughout the afternoon. At 3:00 p.m., students from Kindergarten through Grade 3 arrive. This larger group has snacks and begins to tackle the evening’s homework, prior to play. Once time has been given to homework, with the assistance of the teachers, the children can relax and engage in fun with others. Extended Day comes at a cost of $6.25 an hour and runs from 1:00 – 5:30 p.m., five days a week. Any combination of days and hours is fine.
There is a similar program for students in Grades 4 – 8 who opt not to participate in an after-school sport. They report to the library, where a teacher supervises an afternoon study hall. Students are allowed to work together in small groups on assignments. The option to attend study hall is built into the student activity fee for this age group, so Extended Day comes at no additional charge to the family.
